FHQ Glasgow Lesbian Bar John Street

Some of you will know that I am often found sitting with my friends in FHQ the Ladies Only Lesbian Bar.

It is situated in Glasgow City Centre, on John Street, you could actually miss it because there is no big illuminated flashing sign outside it, there is simple a small concrete rectangle on the wall outside it, with FHQ carved into it.

FHQ (Female Head Quarters) is a Lesbian Only Bar, well Women only bar, I don’t suppose you have to be a lesbian to get in FHQ!

You go up a winding stair case to the top and enter into Glasgow’s FHQ, for those of you who may feel a bit self conscious, then I am afraid there is no hiding, due to the open plan of FHQ you basically get seen by everyone when you enter!

The bar is located at the back of the room and the toilets are to the left of the bar.

There are actually two sets of winding staircases, one leads down to Speak Easy, a mixed gay bar (men and women) and the other is the staircase you came up to come into FHQ.

I will mention that there are plans to allow men in FHQ, perhaps on the quieter days or nights, but as far as I am aware, you will need a female to sign you in if you are male.

As I write this post, FHQ is Lesbian / Women Only.

There is talk that men will be allowed in during the week but not at weekends.

So is FHQ, Glasgow’s only Lesbian / Women only bar any good?

Well they do offer a varied range of themed nights such as:

• Mondays - Open Mic Night

• Tuesdays - Quiz With Big Prizes

• Wednesdays - Pool Tournament

• Thursdays - Poker Tournament

• Fridays - Resident DJ with all latest Hits

• Saturdays - Resident DJ with Pop Anthems

• Sundays - Big Screen Sports

I have been to all of the nights, does that surprise you???

In fact, when FHQ first opened I think I was in it for a record breaking 9 nights in a row, I was amazed that Glasgow finally had a lesbian or female only bar!

Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind socialising with gay men, in fact, I love them! But just to be able to sit in female only company was such a breath of fresh air!

FHQ Lesbian Only Bar opening times are:

• Monday - Thursday 5pm til Midnight

• Friday 5pm - 2am

• Saturday & Sunday 12noon til 2am

FHQ has 4 booths and various other low bar stool seating, it can get very busy so if you want a seat get there early.

I will forewarn you that the light shades in the booths are lethal!

Be very careful when you step up because the shades are so low I have seen many a lesbian bump their head on them, much to the hilarity of everyone else in FHQ, it’s almost like an FHQ initiation, to hit your head on those damn lightshades!

Ok, I admit it’s funny the first time, but when you keep banging your head on them, it does tend to get rather annoying!

There are only 3 toilets so there can often be a queue for them also!

Be very careful if you use the third toilet, as the door opens out and not in, and you can often bash the door into an unsuspecting Lesbian using the hand dryer behind the door!

Getting served at the bar is never normally a problem, the all female bar staff are very quick at serving and most of them do it with a smile too!

I will also mention that on a Sunday, the L Word Dvd Series is often shown on the Big Screen, there is one main projector type big screen at the front, and a smaller flat screen tv in each of the four booths.

FHQ also has bar snacks for sale, and I can recommend the “Fish Finger Sandwich” I don’t know why but that name always makes me giggle, how mature am I?

The Fish Finger sandwich is very popular with the Lesbians so if you want one, get ordering your food early!

There are many dishes on offer from steak sandwiches, to burgers, chips and nachos.

The food is reasonably priced, delivered quickly and is normally quite tasty!
